Pleasant things

The Standard May 2, 2026

Something pleasant for me is to take a walk on a sunny morning with temperatures in the 60s, especially when the nearby patch of honeysuckle is in bloom. Listening to the birds sing, smelling the sweet fragrance, and seeing all of the bright spring colors certainly stir deep thankfulness to God. Life never will be without challenges, but it certainly is more pleasant when we are striving to follow Christ closely, live in grace, and manifest peace.

What are some things that are particularly pleasant to you? Perhaps you’re looking forward to end-of-school activities and a summer break for the children. Maybe you have planned some special time with family or friends or a trip or staycation. Most of us have responsibilities or humdrum tasks which must be attended to, but hopefully we also are able to enjoy parts of every day. Possibly there is a peaceful spot where you retreat for a few minutes of quiet on a daily basis. God understands that it is good for us to find some enjoyment in our work, free time,  relationships, and worship. The Bible reminds us of pleasant things that God provides.

“Lord, you alone are my portion and my cup; you make my lot secure. The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; surely I have a delightful inheritance. I will praise the Lord, who counsels me; even at night my heart instructs me.” Psalm 16:5-7

“How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity!” Psalm 133:1

“Praise the Lord. Praise the name of the Lord; praise him, you servants of the Lord, you who minister in the house of the Lord, in the courts of the house of our God. Praise the Lord, for the Lord is good; sing praises to his name, for that is pleasant.” Psalm 135:1-3

“Praise the Lord. How good it is to sing praises to our God, how pleasant and fitting to praise him!” Psalm 147:1

“For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding. He holds success in store for the upright, he is a shield to those whose walk is blameless, for he guards the course of the just and protects the way of his faithful ones. Then you will understand what is right and just and fair—every good path. For wisdom will enter your heart, and knowledge will be pleasant to your soul. Discretion will protect you, and understanding will guard you.” Proverbs 2:6-11

“Blessed are those who find wisdom, those who gain understanding, for she is more profitable than silver and yields better returns than gold. She is more precious than rubies; nothing you desire can compare with her. Long life is in her right hand; in her left hand are riches and honor. Her ways are pleasant ways, and all her paths are peace. She is a tree of life to those who take hold of her; those who hold her fast will be blessed.” Proverbs 3:13-18

“Perfume and incense bring joy to the heart, and the pleasantness of a friend springs from their heartfelt advice.” Proverbs 27:9
