Few carols express the theme of the fourth week in Advent better than “Love Came Down at Christmas” by Christina Rossetti. In 1885 she wrote this poem based on 1 John 4:7-11.
“Love came down at Christmas
Love all lovely, love divine
Love was born at Christmas
Star and angels gave the sign.
Worship we the Godhead
Love incarnate, love divine
Worship we our Jesus
But wherewith for sacred sign?
Love shall be our token
Love shall be yours and love be mine
Love to God and to all men
Love for plea and gift and sign.”
Imagine what kind of love it took for God to send his own son to earth, in the flesh, fully divine and fully human. As Dietrich Bonhoeffer noted about the incarnation, “all Christian theology has its origin in the wonder of all wonders: that God became human. Holy theology arises from knees bent before the mystery of the divine child in the stable.” As you ponder this mystery have a wonderful Christmas filled with hope, peace, joy and love!
