Peace – Second Sunday in Advent

12/10/14 Farmville Enterprise

How does this day find you? Are you in the midst of writing Christmas cards, checking things off the shopping list, decorating or baking? The theme for the second Sunday in Advent is peace. In his narrative of Jesus’ birth Luke describes the angels praising God and saying “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.”  How can we nurture a peaceful spirit during these busy days? How can we promote peace in our community?

First we must set aside time to be alone. We each need at least a few minutes for prayer and Bible reading. It’s difficult to experience peace if we don’t slow down. Secondly, we should focus on God’s goodness and love. We must nurture our reliance on God. In life there are many things over which we have little or no control. Let’s cultivate a deep belief that God is good and trustworthy and relax in his provision. Finally, we should take God’s peace out into the world. The way we interact with and care for all kinds of people reflects how God is at work in our lives. Let’s make a choice to listen, encourage and serve in ways that promote peace.

“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.  Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end.” (Isaiah 9:6-7)
