Trust that God is good

The sudden deaths of fourteen victims, mostly in their twenties or late teens, in the New Year’s terrorist attack in New Orleans are tragic beyond words. Their parents, children, siblings, grandparents, relatives, teammates and friends now must deal with shock and grief. May God encompass them with indescribable love.

How can such evil exist around us? For some people, the issue looms about how a good and all-powerful God could allow the suffering we see. This might be the deepest and most complex philosophical question ever. On the other hand, the Apostle Paul confidently asserts that “we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” Romans 8:28

In this fallen world, it can be difficult to avoid being discouraged by so much brokenness, sadness and pain. Years ago, I realized it was easier for me to internalize the belief that God is love than the fact that God is good. My attitude reflected confidence in being the recipient of divine, personal love more than an understanding of the Lord’s desire for me to flourish in his good plan for my life.

I was a bit like Eve in Genesis 3 when the serpent slyly suggested that God was withholding something positive or beneficial from Adam and her. The serpent misrepresented the words of the Lord. “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden?’ Genesis 3:1 Their sin of disobedience stemmed from a failure to trust God to be good.

Like the Psalmist, it is helpful for us to remember and give thanks every day. “Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in him.” Psalm 34:8 “For the Lord is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations.” Psalm 100:5 “Praise the Lord. Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever.” Psalm 106:1 “Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever.” Psalm 107:1

Although we can’t remotely begin to comprehend the problem of evil and might underestimate the part our own pride, greed and self-centeredness play in the mix, God remains faithful, loving, and good. In the words of Jesus, “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” John 16:33
